Google

At Google, we build technology that helps people do more for the planet. Operating our business in an environmentally sustainable way has always been a core value. We think there’s a lot to be proud of—but there’s also a lot more important work to do. We unify our practices, partnerships, and products around a single mission — to foster sustainability at scale.

With over 120bn hours of gaming watchtime on YouTube, more than 3bn active Android devices globally and over 2bn monthly active users on Google Play downloading billions of games in 2022, we have many touch points across the entire Gaming Industry.

Being an integral part of the gaming ecosystem, we would like to help decarbonize the industry as well as amplifying the reach of the Green Game Jam by becoming a member of UNEP's Playing for the Planet Alliance.

As a member of the Alliance, we will:

A) Further work on our carbon footprint with the aim to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain and to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. We are aiming to achieve this by

(i) Reduce 50% of our combined Scope 1, 2 (market-based), and 3 absolute emissions before 2030 and

(ii) Run on carbon-free energy 24/7 on every grid where we operate by 2030.

B) Focus on coming full circle: We are aiming to

(i) Use recycled or renewable material in at least 50% of plastic used across our consumer hardware product portfolio by 2025 and

(ii) Make product packaging 100% plastic-free by 2025.

C) Inspire action by amplifying the efforts of the Green Game Jam in 2024 with the help of our Google teams by helping to promote the studios, host the Green Game Jam Awards and facilitate workshops to support the Green Game Jam participants.
