The Playing for the Planet team headed out to San Francisco to meet its members and hit the floor at the Game Developers Conference 2023.

Here are the key takeaways:

1) Let's dial down the frame rates (fast)

Amazing session by Trista Patterson from Microsoft showing how Halo and Fortnite switched down the frame rates by 30-40% saw similar carbon savings, making this industry-standard will see high yields on carbon reduction;

2) Frenemies are great

Really good to see Unity & Unreal, Apple & Google, Playstation & X-Box swap notes, and learn what more they can do on sustainability.

3) The Climate Check worked

We have had nearly 500 people through the check at GDC which is great, its a brilliant gate-way to seeing where you stand and what more you can do, click here https://lnkd.in/ehBRCgTA;

4) We've quite the team

Siiri Mäkelä, Lisa Pak and Deborah Mensah-Bonsu & Raphaël Benros are utterly brilliant, and it was so good to spend time with lots of people within the Alliance, what a lovely group of passionate and purpose-fuelled people. Working to support women's leadership in this arena is something I am going to be reflecting on too (as this was a hyper-male event).

5) The door is always open

This year we're keen to grow and support more studios on their journey - we're 10 set to sign up in the coming weeks, let us know if you'd like to join them.

We can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for climate action in the games industry!
