Playing for the Planet today announces the 78 games that are set to take part in the 5th edition of the Green Game Jam (GGJ) across 15 countries.
The goal? Using video games to encourage 1 million players to take one action in real life for the environment.
The Jam is an annual movement in collaboration with Games for Good in which studios are challenged to implement green activations in their games, ranging from time-limited events and storylines to social media campaigns.
Over the past four years 120 games in total have participated in the GGJ, planting over 2.5 million trees and raising both funds and awareness with support from players all over the world.
However, new research suggests that contrary to popular belief, raising awareness of climate change doesn’t increase the likelihood that people will take action against it - rather, empowering them to take that first step is what prompts lasting change.
With that in mind, this year’s theme extends the Jam’s focus from awareness to action. The challenge now is to prompt player communities to take doable actions outside of the game for the environment that together add up to make a big difference.

The 78 participating games will kick off the jam online and in-person across the world tonight, with thanks to hosts and participants in the GGJ Space Ape (London), Wooga (Berlin), Ubisoft (Barcelona), Supercell (Helsinki) and Amazon Games (Irvine, CA).
