We’re excited to announce that the inaugural Playing for the Planet Awards will be held on Monday 18th November as part of an informal mixer at Metacore HQ in Helsinki, with thanks to Google and Neogames.
What are the Playing for the Planet Awards?
Awards for sustainability tend to cover one category at games industry awards show, and they frequently compare a variety of different companies working on different things in different spaces.
For the Playing for the Planet Awards, we hope to recognize the great work the games industry has done on sustainability on a number of different metrics: the narratives within games, the carbon cost of running them, and the work done by studios and individuals alike to pioneer decarbonisation and set examples to the wider industry.
We will be giving out 13 awards celebrating the work from participating games of the 5th edition of the Green Game Jam as well as the many other initiatives that the industry has undertaken that don’t fit within this framework.
Who is invited?
The event is designed to be open to everyone, not just those hoping to receive an award. We’ve timed it to coincide with Roviocon and Slush week so that anyone in town working in or curious about sustainable gaming can come down and join in the celebrations.
The Awards will also be screened for the London participants of the Green Game Jam at an in-person event at Amazon HQ.
What will it involve?
If you’re interested in hearing more about our work more broadly, be sure to get there early. We’ll kick off the event by hearing from Supercell and Metacore about their sustainability journey, as well as their respective work with Playing for the Planet and the Green Game Jam. Meanwhile after the ceremony, we’ve baked in a few hours to celebrate with drinks, nibbles and activities to get everyone chatting.
What else is going on?
We’re also thrilled to be announcing the Google’s Choice Award for the Green Game Jam at Roviocon itself, as part of the conference’s “Games for Good” track. This will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on the participation of mobile games in the Green Game Jam.
Whilst this year’s Roviocon is invite only, you can register to attend the Playing for the Planet Awards here.
