We’re delighted to reveal that Tencent Games is this year’s winner of the gamescom sustainability award, announced at gamescom Opening Night Live on Tuesday 20th August.
“We’re incredibly honored at Tencent Games to receive this award,” said Brent Irvin, President of Tencent Americas, joining Playing for the Planet’s Lisa Pak on the ONL stage. “Tencent Games encompasses many things — from studios in China, Europe and elsewhere to our global publishing business — but one thing they all share is a commitment to operating our business in a sustainable way.”
“We are committed to achieving carbon neutrality in our own operations and across the supply chain by 2030, and want to thank our studios, partners and our gaming community, whose support is essential to achieving our goal of driving positive change in our game business.”
Following close deliberation between the nominees, Playing for the Planet’s judging panel were particularly impressed by Tencent’s transparent approach to providing a detailed pathway towards its ambitious sustainability targets, alongside regular data-driven measurement updates on its progress, covering not just the company’s emissions footprint, but its impact on biodiversity and nature.
“Whether it is heat, floods, or fires, new climate records are being broken every day,” added Playing for the Planet co-founder Sam Barratt, following Tencent’s selection as this year’s award winner. “While the news can feel grim, there is still time to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.
“Tencent Games’ leadership is worthy of recognition at gamescom to meaningfully reduce their carbon emissions and engage their players, and Playing for the Planet is looking forward to working more closely with them and other studios to see how this can be ratcheted up further.”
The gamescom sustainability award celebrates organisations from across the global games industry that have demonstrated their public commitments to sustainable values, including their approach to carbon accounting and emissions reductions, as well as how they work with and inspire external parties like suppliers, industry peers, and their player communities.
All exhibitors of gamescom can apply for this award category, at no additional cost, so long as they have an active sustainability policy for their own gamescom activities. This year’s winner was selected by Playing for the Planet in consultation with game - The German Games Industry Association.
The award category is also part of the gamescom goes green initiative, which sees gamescom collaborate with its visitors and partners to reduce its environmental impact and take action on the climate.
